What are Tanitabs?

Tanitabs are toothpaste tablets produced by a Canadian company based in Montreal, Quebec called Tanit. Their main focus is plastic-free, and sustainably-produced personal and home-care products.

Quick Summary of The Good

Tanitabs toothpaste tablets actually have quite a lot going for them:

  • They have a few different flavours

    • Mint

    • Strawberry (my personal favourite)

    • Mint + Charcoal

  • Fluoride-free because it uses an alternative called hydroxyapatite (HAp for short)

  • Cruelty-free and vegan ingredients

  • Gentle on sensitive teeth

  • Travels easily since there is no tube, or liquid

  • Reusable glass and bamboo container

  • The refill pouches contain roughly 2 months worth of tablets and are fully compostable

History

I went to the dentist for a cleaning several years ago. My hygienist at the time recommended Tanitabs to me simply because I didn't like most of the commercially-available toothpaste flavours. When I got home, I looked into Tanit and loved all of the additional perks like vegan ingredients, cruelty-free, and minimal waste. I didn't hesitate and ordered right away.

I was super excited when it arrived. I absolutely loved the strawberry flavour. I am also very proud to say that I have been using it exclusively since and I have not had a single dental hygienist since tell me about any cavities or issues with my teeth. I am terrible when it comes to flossing, so I always hear about that, but my teeth have been in great shape since I started using Tanitabs!

They're also great for travel. Since they aren't a liquid, there isn't a small cap on how much you can bring. The container itself is tiny so it packs nicely. If it somehow broke in your bag, you wouldn't have to worry about cleaning paste or liquid out of your belongings. Maybe just some powder and tablet chunks.

The reusable glass and bamboo container with refills that come in fully compostable pouches is also a huge selling point for me. I consider myself to be an environmentalist so any companies that have thought through the entire life-cycle of their products and made good effort to minimize waste and ecological harm have earned my repeat business. As such, I have subscribed to Tanitabs toothpaste directly from their website. However, they also have an Amazon storefront (links below).

It's About As Close To Perfect As You Can Get

I don't really have a lot of bad things to say about Tanitabs toothpaste. I really like the product, but there is one thing that sticks out to me here.

The price. As far as toothpaste goes, I would definitely say this is on the pricier side. Without subscribing on Tanit's website, at the time of writing 248 tablets is $41.50 Canadian. At about 17 cents per tablet, that works out to 34 cents per day if you brush twice a day like I do. Compare that to some standard toothpastes you can get in 125mL tube for less than $5 Canadian. That works out to roughly 4 cents per millilitre. That's less than 10 cents per day if you brush like me.

For me, it's worth it to save on additional plastic pollution, but not everyone may feel the same. Beyond that, I don't really have anything negative to say about this toothpaste. I am a big fan of it and the company it comes from.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I would definitely recommend Tanitabs toothpaste.
